When I shoot families and events, my goal is to have the photos evoke a vivid memory of the celebration. The end results I create tend to have a very narrative feel, with more candid shots than posed portraits. While traditional portraits are important, they alone do not recount the event the way that candid interactions do. For me, rather, it is the smallest details and the most fleeting interactions between people which evoke the strongest memories. For this reason, I tend to focus on capturing moments that are spontaneous and unplanned.
I think the story-telling aspect is particularly strong in this set from the first birthday celebration of a little boy named Ian in Hicksville, Long Island, NY at the end of August 2021. His mother, Angelica, had planned a cute Cocomelon-themed backyard birthday, but became understandably upset when it ended up pouring all afternoon. Though things did not start off as planned, we did salvage the decorations pretty well, and everyone laughed, ate, danced in the rain-soaked dirt, and enjoyed free ice cream directly from an ice cream truck that pulled up into the driveway.
Ian is a very smiley and bouncy little baby! It is obvious how much he has thrived surrounded by such love, attention, and family.

Cuando fotografío familias y eventos, mi objetivo es que las fotos evoquen un recuerdo vívido de la celebración. Los resultados finales que hago tienden a tener una sensación muy narrativa, con fotos más francas y sinceras que retratos posados tradicionales. Es verdad que los retratos tradicionales son importantes, pero no relatan el evento de la forma en que lo hacen las interacciones sinceras. Su madre, Angelica, había planeado un lindo fiesta con tema de Cocomelon en el patio, pero comprensiblemente se molestó cuando terminó lloviendo toda la tarde. Ian realmente es un bebé muy animoso con una sonrisa grandísimo. Le encanta bailar y estar con su gente. Es obvio cuánto ha prosperado rodeado de tanto amor, atención y familia.
